Roisin Mulligan And Ann McKeown Of Omeagh Historical Society Ireland -Karin Avila
Our Spain-based reporter Karin Avila recently visited Ireland and the village of Omeacg. I There she interviewed Róisín Mulligan, Chairwoman of An Cumann Stáir Uí Mhèith (The Omeath Historical Society), established in 2003, and Ann McKeown. Omeath is located on the east coast of Ireland, roughly equidistant between Dublin and Belfast. Ann is the descendent of a famous relative, Anne O’Hanlan, the last woman recorded as speaking Omeath Gaelic, a dialect that is now extinct. Eileen née Mac Cuarta, who kindly served us tea at the Granvue, is related to Seamus Seamus “Dall” Mac Cuarta, the famous blind poet (1650 – 1732) who wrote The House of Corrakit in reference to one of 10 townlands in Omeath. We discussed history, nature, and mythology, from the Greenway, leading to Carlingford to the Long Woman’s Grave. Photo: Karin AvilaRead More
