A Mis-step, No Photo ID, Did Not Deter Culinary Editor Rita Erlich in Vienna
Our culinary editor Rita Erlich is back from Europe with a cautionary tale about her visit to Vienna and how she managed to identify herself without carrying the usual photo ID. Despite a pause in her activities, Rita still manages to check out the culinary and cultural scene, giving her recommendations for an enjoyable visit.
She warns: Museum charges are quite high – 18 Euros and more. One useful thing to do is to pre-book your tickets to the most popular museums, like the Kunsthistorisches, the Sisi, Schonbrunn….”My favourite is the Museum of Applied Art – or MAK in abbreviated German.”
Vienna’s cafes are worth a program on their own. My recommendation is for Demel’s, and for Landtmann, but I will be going back next year to check out the others. Coffee, cakes – elaborate wonderfully rich confections like the Esterhazy, layers of nut sponge and buttercream. Simpler cakes like kugelhopf, and I so appreciated the Landtmann has a mini kugelhoft.
