Cam Hamilton Federal Mills On Reinventing Heritage Ex-Government Clothing Factory -Graeme Kemlo
Victoria’s second city, Geelong, has taken its share of knocks over the years, particularly with the loss of some of its manufacturing industries, initially the city rode on the sheep’s back as one of the largest wool exporters, then notably the Ford Motor Car factory which also supported a range of secondary parts makers. However it has also produced its share of success stories. This one combines the loss of one industry with a re-imagining of the 14-acre site where in 1915 the government set up Federal Woolen Mills. to make uniforms for our armed forces and later for Post Office staff. When it shutdown Cam Hamilton’;s family bought the land with 35,000 square metres of substantial brick buildings and have built an award-winning business campus which has attracted IT innovators, artisans and creatives.
