Raisa Banfield On Panama Citizen Protest Over Canadian Copper Miner -Bridgett Leslie
Panamanian Citizens took to the streets over the past few weeks to protest their government’s decision to renew its contract with Canadian mining company First Quantum Minerals. The company operates one of the world’s largest copper mines. In 2017 this contract was declared at Panama’s top court to be unconstitutional. Last week the new contract was fast tracked through congress for approval. Protestors say this new contract undermines the country’s national sovereignty over its minerals.
In a special report New York-based correspondent Bridgett Leslie speaks with Raisa Banfield, Director of Sustainable Development at the Center for the Integration of Nature and Cities (CINC). She is also an architect and served as Deputy Mayor of Panama City, 2014-2019. She is also a well known environmental advocate and is a key speaker at the current protests.
