Pack your bags … Lake Eyre in South Australia’s Outback has water –Carolyne Jasinski

When Lake Eyre in Outback South Australia sees a trickle of water, the news makes headlines all over the country. Heavy rain from northern Australia sometimes seeps far enough south, taking three months or so to make its way underground via the Artesian Basin. It’s a rare occurrence but when that water flows all the way to Warburton Creek and into the salt pans of Lake Eyre, the Outback comes to life. Fish return, plants regenerate and birds flock back to the region along with a band of adventurous tourists close behind. So you can imagine what happens when the lake fills … and almost overflows.It has only happened four times in the past 160 years … and it’s happening right now. Carolyne Jasinski was lucky enough to get a bird’s eye view of the flood waters on a flight over the lake from the isolated – but now very busy town of William Creek. She talks to Trevor Wright – the town’s mayor and owner of Wrights Air.

Chris Thé is a renowned Sydney pastry chef, formerly of Black Star Bakery and now Heart in Stanmore. But he almost didn’t become a chef, studying psychology instead. He tells Graeme Kemlo he gave up studying psychology because he was better at making people happy than making unhappy people better. It was a great decision he says to do an apprenticeship, graduate and then find a job with Timothy Pak Choy, who offered to teach him everything on the condition that he remained working with him for four years – effectively another apprenticeship.And the rest is history.

Reporter Carolyne Jasinski was last heard of heading into the central Australian outback on a solo trip in a four-wheel drive, with a two-way radio and a personal locator beacon for safety.

We at Travel Writers Radio were a bit apprehensive about this off-road experience. As it turns out, so was she.

Carolyne saw few motorists en route but dozens of wild brumbies roaming free, and she she has lived to tell the tale as she explains to Graeme Kemlo.
